Israeli airstrikes hit Syrian air base as US warns of escalation
On 18 August 2026, eight Israeli airstrikes hit the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province. The strikes reportedly damaged the runway and other infrastructure, but no casualties were reported.
Why did Israel strike?
According to Israeli officials, the operation was aimed at preventing a potential Turkish military deployment at the base. Israel considers an increased Turkish military presence in northern Syria a security concern.
US reaction:
US envoy for Syria Tom Barrack said Washington was “deeply concerned” and described the strikes as an “unnecessary escalation” that does not contribute to regional stability. He called for restraint and diplomatic dialogue.
Turkey and Syria reacted strongly:
Both governments condemned the strikes, describing them as violations of Syrian sovereignty. Turkey's reaction is particularly significant because Ankara has close ties with Syria's new government and is involved in rebuilding and supporting its institutions.
