Saudi Arabia’s Voluntary National Review ties sustainability to Vision 2030’s final years
Saudi Arabia has presented its 2026 Voluntary National Review (VNR), highlighting how the country is aligning its sustainable development efforts with the final phase of Vision 2030, the national transformation strategy set to conclude in 2030.
The report outlines the Kingdom's progress toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while emphasizing that sustainability has become a central pillar of its economic and social reforms. Rather than treating sustainability as a standalone objective, Saudi Arabia integrates it into policies covering economic diversification, environmental protection, social development, and governance.
Key highlights of the review include:
- Economic diversification: Continued efforts to reduce dependence on oil revenues by expanding sectors such as tourism, technology, renewable energy, logistics, manufacturing, and financial services.
- Climate and environmental action: Investments in clean energy, carbon emissions reduction, afforestation initiatives through the Saudi Green Initiative, water conservation, and biodiversity protection.
- Human development: Increased participation of women in the workforce, improvements in healthcare and education, and initiatives aimed at enhancing quality of life and creating employment opportunities for Saudi citizens.
- Digital transformation: Expansion of digital government services, artificial intelligence, smart city projects, and innovation ecosystems to improve public services and economic competitiveness.
- Global partnerships: Continued collaboration with international organizations and private-sector stakeholders to support sustainable development and share best practices.
The report also acknowledges that challenges remain, particularly in balancing rapid economic growth with environmental sustainability, strengthening climate resilience, and ensuring efficient resource management.
As Vision 2030 enters its final years, the Voluntary National Review serves as both a progress assessment and a roadmap for completing the Kingdom's long-term development goals, reaffirming Saudi Arabia's commitment to achieving sustainable, inclusive, and diversified economic growth.
