On Saturday, media platform X announced it would cease its operations in Brazil "effective immediately" due to what it described as "censorship orders" from Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes. X claimed that Moraes had secretly threatened one of its legal representatives with arrest if the platform did not comply with orders to remove certain content.
This move comes in response to Moraes' previous orders for X to block specific accounts as part of his investigation into “digital militias” allegedly involved in spreading misinformation and hate during former President Jair Bolsonaro's government. The Brazilian Supreme Court, where Moraes serves, did not immediately comment on the situation.
Elon Musk, owner of X, has criticized Moraes' decisions as "unconstitutional," leading to tensions between the platform and Brazilian authorities. Despite the suspension of X’s operations in Brazil, the platform remains accessible to Brazilian users. X representatives had previously stated they would comply with the legal rulings but faced issues with account blocking as ordered by Moraes.
