US organization scraps Palestine issue of Journal of Architectural Education, fires executive editor

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) recently canceled the Fall 2025 issue of the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE), which was to focus on Palestine, and terminated its interim executive editor, McLain Clutter.

The decision to cancel the issue was made by the ACSA Board of Directors on February 21, 2025.

The ACSA cited concerns about potential risks, including personal threats to journal editors, authors, and reviewers, as well as legal and financial risks to the organization, as reasons for the cancellation.

Clutter was dismissed after refusing to assist in editing a replacement issue and declining to endorse the Board's decision.

The editorial team for the canceled issue included Nora Akawi, Omar Jabary Salamanca, Zoé Samudzi, and Nick Estes.

They expressed disappointment over the cancellation, attributing it to increasing repression and censorship of content related to Palestine in the U.S. and Europe.

The ACSA's actions have drawn criticism from various quarters, with some accusing the organization of self-censorship and failing to uphold academic freedom.

The JAE editorial board is exploring alternative formats and venues to publish the work intended for the canceled issue.
