Australia is set to introduce new legislation that will restrict access to social media for individuals under 16 years old. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that social media has been causing significant harm to young people, particularly with regards to their mental health. The law will place the responsibility on social media platforms to verify the age of their users, ensuring that only those who meet the age requirement can access these platforms. This move aims to ease the burden on parents and to protect children from online dangers, including cyberbullying and harmful content
The government has gained broad bipartisan support for this initiative, and it is expected to be introduced to parliament by late November 2024 .
